The Sega Addicts Podcast

We asked and you answered, or maybe you asked and we answered? It's a big ol' mailbag episode! Brett, Nic, and Scotty start out by discussing their personal Game of the Year recommendations and then dive right in to that Scrooge McDuck vault of letters and postcards you sent on the interwebz. We go through everything from why Sega should hire us, which consoles we are still hunting for, how we would introduce anyone to Sega, and a whole lot more!

This is the last podcast of the year, but keep an eye on our Twitter and Discord for a few more streams to close out 2017. It has really been an amazing year with our most successful 24-Hour Dreamless Dreamcast Marathon to so many great streams with all of you involved! Thanks for everything! Sonic Forces released. Did you know that? Yeah we sorta forgot for a second as well, but then we realized we should talk about it! Woo! Remember Sonic Mania? Crap, well try to forget it. Remember Sonic Generations? Well, try to forget that game too, because we need to talk about Sonic Forces!

Nic, Brett, and Scotty also wanna tell you about some moments in games that made them think way more about that game than they may have in the past. Believe it or not, sometimes video games actually involve emotions. And you guys had some words on the topic as well!

Speaking of words, and you, the next episode (and final one for 2017!) will be a special mailbag episode! That means you need to get those crazy, deep, ridiculous, hilarious, obnoxious, and any other questions into us through our Discord and Twitter before December 12th. We have a good bit collected, but still need plenty more! Wanna know our favorite Sonic character? Favorite food? Best college story? Dumbest thing we ever dreamed about? Our first video game crush? Well you better ask us! Otherwise how will you find out?!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled podcast... schedule... to bring you a movie commentary! Fire up those VCRs and find your copy of the 1995 gem Mortal Kombat, because TJ, Nic, Brett, and Scotty are here to help you endure some "fine" cinema.

That's right, you get to watch a movie with the Addicts! And boy howdy, are you in for a treat. The director of Mortal Kombat, Paul W. S. Anderson, has gone on to create such quality video game movie adaptations as the Resident Evil series, and DOA: Dead or Live. Other Anderson greats include Death Race 2, Death Race 3: Inferno, and Alien Vs. Predator. Help us.

We will return to our regular ear candy with Podcast Episode 123, and don't forget to keep submitting your questions for our mail bag episode 125. For the moment though, "We got movie sign!"

Elle, Brett, and Scotty also discuss games that they could never sell or hold significant meaning. You can probably guess most of their answers. And that's why you guys rock!

We have Episode 125 coming up, and want your Listener Questions! Episode 125 will be a Mailbag Special composed entirely of your questions. So get them in now!

This week the Addicts discuss a cult classic from the beloved Dreamcast: Illbleed. You may wanna bring a spare pair of pants for this one according to a certain incredible commercial. The gang try to figure out what it is about the quirky game that keeps them coming back for more whether it's the Halloween season or not.

And speaking of quirky, Elle, Brett, and Scotty discuss the Questionarium centered around video games releasing incomplete. Is it fair to us as consumers? A few listeners also weigh in on this anomaly that has become commonplace with today's video games.

Don't forget to tune in on Saturday November 4th for our second Marathon of the year to raise money for Extra Life! Elle and her sister will be playing the entirety of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and only insanity can ensue! Be sure to subscribe to our Twitch channel if you haven't already, so you know when things kick off and can help us donate even more money to a great cause.

This week the Addicts get back to the routine and bring in the spooky Sega Genesis classic (?) Haunting Starring Polterguy. We aren't really sure if anyone was looking for this game while trick-or-treating. But hey, it sure is unique...

Joining Elle, Brett, Nic, and Scotty this week is their good buddy Anthony. You may remember him from such great hits as The 24-Hour Dreamless Dreamcast Marathon of 2017, where he became the self-proclaimed Champion of Pen Pen Tricelon.

The Addicts also discuss whether or not one should be able to bypass gameplay to fully enjoy the story/cutscenes in video games. And you beautiful people lend us your opinions on the matter!

Play along at home and get ready for the next Game of the Week: Illbleed on the Sega Dreamcast.

The Addicts have all had a bit of time to recover from the annual 24-Hour Dreamless Dreamcast Marathon, and are very excited to recap the insanity. This week Elle, Brett, TJ, Pocky X, Scotty, and honorary Sega Addict MegaMatt gather to giggle about the gaming grander they garnered. For the next two hours, the Addicts recall all 24 hours of the Marathon, which encompassed a total of 37 Dreamcast games and countless smiling faces.

Not only did the Addicts play a crazy amount of games, but with your amazing help they raised over $1,000 for the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital through Extra Life - doubling the money raised last year!

And a special congratulations to Morgs, who will be receiving a complete Dreamcast console courtesy of Warp Zone with a blue VMU and copies of Flogian Bros, and the best fishing games around: Sega Bass Fishing and Soulcalibur.

Again guys, we cannot thank you enough for making this Marathon the best one yet.

On this week's episode of the podcast, everyone's opinion is wrong except for Scotty's since cool people know that Sonic R is the best 3D Sonic game on the Sega Saturn. Sonic R is also worth every penny Scotty paid for it on release day. For some reason, people are willing to pay less than $50 for Sonic R now, and should probably learn the error of their ways before a certain plush anomaly visits them in their sleep.

Oh, and the Addicts also discuss the Do's and Don't's of hidden lore in video games in great length, and why no one wants to do anything with Big the Cat... not in a box, not with socks, no matter the the size of his... clocks?

No podcast next week folks, because we will be knee deep in preparations for the 24-Hour Dreamless Dreamcast Marathon! See you at Twitch on 9.9.17 (Saturday)!

The Addicts also discuss most excellent origin stories and answer some amazing questions from you amazing people! Who knew that Sonic Mania would lead into this much Game Gear discussion?

Otherwise we here at Sega Addicts and Warp Zone are getting pretty pumped for the 24-Hour Dreamless Dreamcast Marathon! And helping out Extra Life! Woo!

Elle, Pocky, TJ, Nic, Brett AND Scotty also finally get down to why the Dreamcast is so beloved and celebrated. Nic also tries to convince that the Sou- um... the Dreamcast may rise again. That's JUST what a communist would say.

This week's episode kinda turns into a love letter for the Saturn, and the boys couldn't be happier about it.

The Addicts also get way into their top picks for Sega Forever and wonder why SEGA doesn't put Pocky X, Brett, and Scotty in charge of their marketing. Also, would a Dreamcast Mini be worth it? Only if you get dem sports game on it, bro.

Us Addicts also chit chat about the best "movement" in games from flying and running, to driving and... Downwell? And for some reason everyone tries to guess the first CD Scotty bought (as if we ever stay on track anyway)?

Pocky X also loses his mind at one point, and we discuss our favorite amusement parks after sharing some stories related to theft, vomit, and first dates. It's amazing someone listens to this, isn't it? Thanks!

And what do you think of Subs & Dubs? More specifically, subtitled video games and anime vs. dubbed. These dudes have a lot of feelings about them.

Finally, the Addicts spend more time than they probably should discussing ways that Pocky X should fit phallic objects into his artwork. Oh, and also these weirdos talk about unfair boss fights. Won't You?

If there was a single Visual Novel series to recommend for newcomers to get into the genre, it’d have to be Zero Escape for blending complex puzzle solving gameplay and decision based visual novel storytelling. The Nonary Games is Spike Chunsoft and Aksys’ swan song for the trilogy; a re-release of the first two titles of the series, a complete HD remake of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, aka 999, the second title being an improved port of Virtue’s Last Reward.

Both 999 and VLR are set around the “Nonary Games”, involving 9 strangers trapped in a closed space. Each participant has a bracelet locked onto their wrists that can end their lives if they break the rules given by the mastermind known only as “Zero”.  In 999 you play as Junpei, who wakes up on a mysterious cruise ship with 8 other people. They are given one goal: find a door with a【9】on it and escape the ship that will sink in 9 hours. Each bracelet has a unique number, and they must use different combinations to enter different numbered doors, solving escape the room puzzles along the way. If any person breaks Zero’s rules, a detonator will go off in that person’s bracelet, activating a bomb in their stomach. VLR has you in the shoes a new protagonist named Sigma, who wakes up in a different facility with 8 other people and is forced to play the Nonary Game: Ambidex Edition. This death game features a voting system, where each person must vote to Ally or Betray against people they have worked with in puzzle rooms. The goal is to receive enough points from these AB games to get 9 points and escape the place. With a cast of mostly new faces, and a gigantic facility to escape from, Sigma has to make a copious amount of decisions that will decide the fate of his fellow participants.

The story sections stay engaging for the players, due to the plot’s masterful writing and puzzle pacing. In 999, the puzzle rooms are pre-rendered spaces you can move around in by clicking the L and R buttons to change your perspective. You interact with objects using either the touch screen or a pointer controlled by the left analog stick, a welcome addition inspired by VLR. VLR on the other hand, uses fully explorable 3D rooms, giving you more freedom in the puzzles you solve, and much more challenging puzzles as well. A new feature in VLR is the ability to switch between your held item with a flick of the right analog stick, a huge time saver. Sadly for touch-screen enthusiasts, the PS4 version ditches all touch control, using only analog stick movement.

When you aren’t in escape rooms, you’ll be seeing the story unravel and making choices to change the path you go down. 999 now has the story flowchart feature of VLR, allowing you to jump to different parts of the story; it’s convenient but it can get a little confusing to navigate it sometimes. However, since the original game made you start over every time you wanted to see a new ending, this is a welcome change. The flowchart removes the artificial length the original had from having to replay the entire game to reach different endings, and makes achieving the true ending less of a hassle.

One last new feature to note in the remake of 999 is the 2 modes of experiencing the game: Adventure and Novel. Adventure mode only shows the player lines of dialogue, similar to how the DS version’s top screen was utilized. Novel mode provides all the original narration from the DS version, and has text over the characters instead of a text box. They can be switched between at nearly every moment with just a press of a button. I spent most of my playthrough playing it on Adventure, and it was a great way to experience the story. Dialogue has been changed so Adventure mode can provide all the information players need, and the game changes to Novel mode if a scene requires the narration.

The environments in the 999 remake look crisp and incredible in HD, but certain sprites weren’t so lucky. The hardware limitations of the DS made 999’s original sprites incredibly pixelated, which is no longer the case; effort was taken to bring this art to current gen consoles. While some character art benefits from this, a couple sprites look unflattering. The art definitely shows it’s age, but stays faithful to the original  Each character retains their charming animations from the 2009 release, which look even better with the cleaned-up art. VLR retains its 3D character models and environments are largely unchanged since the 2012 Vita release. This game’s content has remained largely untouched besides a couple typo corrections, those who opt for the PS4 version of this game shouldn’t expect incredible graphics. The game is running at a higher resolution and does have much smoother animation, but texture quality remains the exact same and might be jarring for those used to games made for PS4. I’m the kind of person that prefers these type of games portable, so that’s where I spent most of my time playing these and had no problem. It’ll really come down to preference, so if you prefer handheld or console you’ll be sure to still get a great experience.

The music is just as good as it ever was, and Shinji Hosoe’s tracks sound absolutely chilling. The soundtrack is constantly making you feel tense, rarely easing up. All the music tracks remain the same, but I couldn’t help but think that 999’s soundtrack had some improvements made to it. This is the first time 999 has had voice acting, while VLR launched with it. The ambitious second title in the series really set the bar with it’s phenomenal dub, even going as far to outshine the Japanese audio track, so there was a lot of pressure for the new dub of 999. Fear not: the dub is pretty great. There are still some awkward lines here and there, but once I got used to the voices I grew to love them. The two performances that completely stole the show were Junpei’s and Santa’s. Evan Smith returned from Zero Time Dilemma to voice Junpei, and he did a fantastic job bringing the fan favorite protagonist to life. Santa’s voice actor, Sean Chiplock, delivered an absolutely perfect performance. The entire cast does a good job, and overall there’s a great dub here. The games also carry a Japanese audio track, but I’ve never found the Japanese audio track in the Zero Escape games to be as good as the English ones.

Despite some very minor presentation flaws, The Nonary Games provides the definitive version of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward. There’s definitely more value here for newcomers to the series, but hardcore fans will definitely enjoy the update on the series’ first entry. I’d recommend getting it on Vita if you have the option, but the PS4 version is still great. It’s a wonderful package with some of my favorite games on them, and I can’t recommend this enough.

Final Score: A

  • With this definitive version, all three games now sit at the same level of quality, which is great because 999’s artificial length made it hard to recommend.
  • If you get addicted to these two games, make sure to check out Zero Time Dilemma.
  • A better name for this game would be: Zero Escape 2.5 HD Remix – Hope You Like Numbers
  • Buy/Rent/Avoid: It’s a perfect package for people who haven’t had a chance to experience these fantastic games. Fans can also be pleased by improved versions of both, so everyone wins.
  • I was filled with a childlike excitement while going through these again, and I truly hope this gets more people into this wonderful series.

Sometimes you play games you enjoy, and sometimes you play games on the Game Gear. This episode included one of those things and we'll let you decide which one. Ayrton Senna Super Monaco GP II was the name of the game this week, and it made Sonic Drift look pretty good.

The Addicts also spend a good bit of time discussing what games they have been playing including still more OverwatchResident Evil 7, and John Wick 2. Nick thinks the ladder is a game, because he plays as John Wick in Pay Day 2 enough to consider it as such. Everyone also yells at Cullen for spending $50 on Yakuza 2. Don't be a Cullen, kids.

Did we mention we also talk about our favorite types villains and go on a 10-minute rant involving the topical TV show, Heroes? Someone has to do it this month.

Speaking of this month, folks, we are going to be taking a short break from podcasting due to vacations, and that crazy thing called "life." We will be back mid-March, but our regular streams will continue in the mean time. Keep an eye on our Twitter account for further updates.

Brett, Nick, and Scotty are here to talk to you about time travel. And the only way to do it is with the help of rage, confusion, and a healthy dose of Sega civil war. That's right it's SONIC CD! The dudes go in deep with talk of the Sonic CD's history, the obvious soundtrack discussion, and how the game reminds them of Mario Kart.

But the time travel discussion doesn't stop there! Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt help the Addicts get through the Questionarium and answer some questions from the previous Game of the Year episode (sorry we missed them last week!).

Fair warning for those who have not yet played any Resident Evil 7 that the boys spoil the first hour or so. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Sega, or not, they are gonna give it to you straight. Did we all decide on a winner? Did Sega have a great year? What is in store for next year? How many HD remakes can Scotty play in a year? How many times did Brett eat crow this year? All this and more in the latest, totally legitimate, Sega Addicts Game of the Year Awards!

Return next week for our regularly scheduled program with the game of the week being Sonic CD.

This week on the worldwide-electronic-voice-box-place Nick, Brett and Scotty discuss the game Iron Man on the original Nintendo DS, because who else would? Is it great? It's is passable? Is it a cash-in? All this and more!

Fair warning there are major Life is Strange spoilers for anyone who has not completed the game yet.

We also try to decide whether or not character customization actually matters to us in video games and get confused as to who Mickey Rourke may or may not be. All in good fun, right? Except Nick really hates blue hair for some reason. He ain't foolin'.

Audio File for Yakuza 0 Review

Audio version of Yakuza 0 First Impressions

Text script:

Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for.  Yakuza 0's release is on the horizon, with Kiwami and Yakuza 6 following not far behind.  In this incredible Year of Yakuza, we've all been waiting with bated breath to see just what Sega of Japan has in store for us, so let's cut right to the chase, shall we?

Kazuma Kiryu is back and reliving his golden days as a fresh young Dojima Family grunt in his newest adventure. Starting from the very bottom of the food chain, Kazuma finds himself working as hired muscle collecting delinquent payments (i.e. beating the living tar out of debtors) for local loan sharks.  Everything changes after one such collection, when his target winds up dead and the Family's none too happy with the prospect of having a murder pinned on them as a result of Kiryu's actions.  It's up to Kazuma to tackle the seedy, fluorescent-colored underbelly of Kamurocho in order to prove his innocence and get to the bottom of what really happened to this seemingly random businessman.

Don't let those neon lights dazzle you, though- there's plenty to do in 1980s Kamurocho.  Between Club Sega, bar activities like darts and karaoke, learning new techniques and fighting styles, and sampling the lovely ladies that the hostess clubs have to offer, players will have their work cut out for them trying to complete everything there is to do.  This is, of course, on top of running a successful racket of your own, which already promises to keep your hands full. Not enough, you say? Fortunately for you, Yakuza 0 isn’t limited to just one character or even one city!  Goro Majima joins the fun and has a manic city of his own to manage in the form of Sotenbori, where there's yet another racket to run and even more on the side to keep you occupied.

By now, you may be wondering how it is that running successful businesses could be important in a brawler game.  What would you say if I told you that the success of your business could be vital to your survival and success in the main game itself?  "That makes no sense," you might say, but it's true- the amount of money you're able to earn determines how powerful you become and, more importantly, how quickly.  No more earning experience to beef up your characters- now, instead of spending skill points, players will spend their hard-earned cash to invest in themselves and unlock new skills and abilities.  No business sense?  No problem! Our heroes can earn their fortune by how well they do in fights as well, earning potentially large sums of cash by putting on a flashy, destructive show of dispatching the local hostiles.  Sure, money can't buy happiness, but it comes pretty close when it's used to directly impact how quickly and brutally you're able to destroy your enemies.

Let's not get so wrapped up in this world of fast money and faster women that we forget about the story, though.  I won't be spoiling anything in this piece or in the full review, but I can say for certain that Yakuza 0's story is shaping up to be stronger than Yakuza 5's was.  Every two chapters, players will switch between Kiryu and Majima, two young, relatively unknown grunts hoping to make it big in the Yakuza underworld, each with their own problems and power struggles to get swept up in.  As it doesn't build on any of the existing story surrounding our heroes, Yakuza 0 has the special privilege of serving as a perfect jump-off point for anybody contemplating trying the series out, and it makes a great opportunity to get to know some very important characters before Yakuza Kiwami, the HD remake of the very first game in the series, comes out in the West later this year.

Yakuza 0 releases for the Playstation 4 on January 24th.  Check back here on January 19th for our full review of the latest title in the well-beloved Yakuza series!

This week, Brett, Scotty, and Elle discuss the latest Phantasy Star Online game to be prolific in the Americas, Phantasy Star Universe for XBox 360!  We ponder whether or not we live in too instantaneous of a world, with the proliferation of social media and the like, to be able to take the time to enjoy a game at our own pace, and Elle drops some relevant knowledge on how to avoid spoilers on Twitter, and to top it all off, we play second fiddle to those McGriddles.
